Message from the new ILA Chair
Dear ILA Members,
It is an honour for me to have been appointed Chair of ILA on 18 June. I am very grateful to the Board of Directors for their trust, and to all ILA members for their support. Many thanks for the numerous kind and enthusiastic messages I have received over the past weeks!
With the approval of the Board of Directors, I have put in place a new Management Committee that will work over the next 2 years to deal with the general management of ILA, interacting between the team of remarkable professionals that work for ILA on a daily basis (Véronique, Goiz, Laurence, Marie-Julie, Mélanie, Thomas, Valérie-Anne) and the Board of Directors. I will be chairing this Management Committee which will have the following members: Ruth Bultmann, Fernand Grulms, Henry Kelly, Virginie Lagrange and Pierre Margue. We will have our first meeting this week and I am excited to kick-off the work with this new team.
As regards the Board of Directors, I have started one-on-one meetings with each of my 19 fellow Directors to listen to what they think the Board should focus on, what our priorities should be, what we wish to improve or change. On the basis of these discussions, we should then be able to have a roadmap for the next 2 years, setting ourselves goals and knowing where we want to focus our work.
I know that our training programme is essential to ILA, and we will need to consider whether we are offering today the trainings our members wish to receive and need. We will be listening to you all in terms of what your expectations are. We will be speaking to various authorities as well, to hear what needs they identify for Directors – we know that some of them are counting on ILA to improve Directors’ knowledge on certain topics. With ESG, AI, digitalisation and other recent trends becoming more and more relevant within companies, we will need to continue to help Directors understand these and their impact on the companies they work with, to embrace the opportunities these topics bring to us, rather than only seeing the constraints they might impose.
Our 23 working groups are a fundamental pillar of ILA: their members contribute time and efforts to ILA’s activities, development and visibility. The number of these committees has increased significantly, and we will be looking to helping them even more in their endeavours.
I could not not mention our certification programmes as I have been Chairing ILA’s Certification Commission for the past 4 years. Our programme for Certified Directors, as well as our newer certification programme for Companies Secretaries are very successful and I look forward to a continued growth in the numbers of ILA certified individuals.
Finally, we will surely pursue our efforts in helping Boards of Directors in their moves to diversify their composition. As we all know, diversification is not only about men and women, but it is about bringing different backgrounds and skills to the table, thus enlarging the scope of ideas and ways of thinking.
Before closing this message, I would like to express a big Thank You to Raymond Schadeck, my predecessor as Chair of ILA. He has lead our Association during 4 years of impressive growth. The visibility of ILA has improved significantly thanks to his dedication and hard work. It is a real challenge I am taking on as his successor.
I wish you all a wonderful and hopefully restful summer. I hope you can find the time to reflect on your achievements and what lies ahead. I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our ILA events, for example our Golf Day on 16 July, our various trainings planned for September and October, or at the latest at our Directors’ Day on 20 November where we are planning a somewhat new format this year and will have very interesting speakers and topics, so make sure you save the date!
