Become an ILA Certified Director
After successfully completing The Essentials Luxembourg and Universal, acquiring a minimum of four years of experience as a Board member of one or more entities performing significant economic activities(*) and collecting the required documents, you can finalise your application.

Certification path
The ILA certification journey for directors is designed around three key stages: Aspiring Director, Associate Director and Certified Director. Each stage supports participants in progressing at the right pace by combining learning, practical experience, and access to a strong governance community. Depending on your profile and experience, you can enter the pathway at the stage that best aligns with your current level and development needs.
- Aspiring Director – Build solid foundations in governance, board roles and expectations.
- Associate Director – Deepen your understanding, broaden your perspective and prepare for higher-impact board contribution.
- Certified Director – Demonstrate and validate your experience, expertise, and professional commitment through a recognised certification.

Requirements
To achieve the ILA Certified Director designation, you must meet the following criteria:
- Successful completion of The Essentials Luxembourg programme
- Successful completion of The Essentials Universal programme (see section “THE ESSENTIALS UNIVERSAL PARTNERS” below)
- Have a minimum of four years’ experience as a Board member of one or more entities engaged in significant economic activities*
(*) Your experience will be validated by the ILA Executive Committee and reported to the Education and Certification Committee (the ILA Board of Directors' delegation). Please note that executive management experience is not recognised. At this stage, only a minimum of four years of experience as a board member is recognised.

- Certificate of attendance for The Essentials - Universal and The Essentials - Luxembourg
- List of your mandates as Board Member (use this template)

YOUR COMMITMENT AS A CERTIFIED DIRECTOR
As an ILA Certified Director, you possess the expected abilities, integrity and professionalism to serve as a director. However, the business environment is constantly evolving, and continuous development is essential to ensure credibility for you and the profession at every stage of your career.
When you reach the level of ILA Certified Director, you are required to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD). ILA supports you in fulfilling your CPD obligations by offering a range of different training courses.
Our aim is to maintain the highest standards of competence among our Certified Directors and to ensure that they remain effective as Board members. In order to maintain your title, you must fulfil the following conditions.
- Remain an ILA member
- Within 5 years of receiving certification, complete the ecoDa module on professional development for European directors
- Undertake at least 12 hours of professional development (CPDs) per calendar year
- Take personal responsibility for your professional development requirements and register non-ILA CPD activities before 31 December each year
