WHO IS IT FOR?
With three years of board experience, five years in executive management, or two years of board experience combined with successful completion of the ILA Bootcamp, you will be eligible to register for The Essentials Luxembourg, which will grant you the title of Associate Director.
Certification path
The ILA certification journey for directors is designed around three key stages: Aspiring Director, Associate Director and Certified Director. Each stage supports participants in progressing at the right pace by combining learning, practical experience, and access to a strong governance community. Depending on your profile and experience, you can enter the pathway at the stage that best aligns with your current level and development needs.
- Aspiring Director – Build solid foundations in governance, board roles and expectations.
- Associate Director – Deepen your understanding, broaden your perspective and prepare for higher-impact board contribution.
- Certified Director – Demonstrate and validate your experience, expertise, and professional commitment through a recognised certification.
Requirements
To become an ILA Associate Director, you must complete The Essentials Luxembourg programme. In order to attend The Essentials Luxembourg, you have to fulfil at least one of the following conditions:
- Having completed the ILA Bootcamp and having at least 2 years' experience as a board member
- Having at least 3 years' experience as a board member
- Having at least 5 years' experience in a relevant executive management position with board exposure
THE ESSENTIALS LUXEMBOURG
Fulfil at least one of the above-mentioned criteria and enrol in The Essentials Luxembourg— ILA’s flagship programme that equips you with the fundamental, in-depth knowledge to excel in your directorship role in Luxembourg.
Through this programme, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities, expectations, and best practices that define effective directorship.
Upon successfully completing the training and passing the corresponding exam, you will be awarded the title of ILA Associate Director — marking the halfway milestone on your journey towards becoming an ILA Certified Director.
From this stage onward, you will engage in continuous professional development (CPD) to maintain and enhance your qualifications, ensuring you stay aligned with evolving governance standards and best practices.

About Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
As an ILA Associate Director, you have the expected skills, integrity and professionalism to act as a director. However, the business environment is constantly evolving, and continuous development is essential to maintain credibility for you and the profession at every stage of your career.
When you access the level of ILA Associate Director, you commit to Continuing Professional Development (CPD). ILA supports you in meeting your CPD obligations by offering a range of training options.
Our objective is to maintain the highest standards of competence among our Associate Directors and to ensure they remain relevant and effective. In order to maintain your title, you must fulfil the following conditions.
- Remain an ILA member.
- Undertake at least 6 hours of professional development (CPDs) per calendar year.
- Take personal responsibility for your professional development requirements
- Register non-ILA activity via your dashboard before 31 December each year, providing proof of your professional development, such as a certificate of course attendance via the members portal.

Your next step: Become an ILA Certified Director
Continue to follow ILA courses, engage in ILA events and networking opportunities and keep growing in your role. To become an ILA Certfified Director, you need to meet the following criteria:
- Successful completion of The Essentials Luxembourg
- Successful completion of The Essentials Universal
- Minimum 4 years' experience as a Board member of one or more entities performing significant economic activities.
The certification programmes organised by ILA are eligible for individual training leave granted by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education (MENEJ). ILA is authorised by the Ministry of Education as a provider of continuing vocational training (agreement dated 11 October 2011).
